Chancellor Willie Perkins to take oath Dec. 28 in Greenwood

An investiture ceremony for new 7th District Chancellor Willie J. Perkins Sr. will be held Dec. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Leflore County Courthouse in Greenwood.

Court of Appeals Judge Tyree Irving will administer the oath of office. Guest speakers will include Rep. Edward Blackmon of Canton, attorney Constance Slaughter-Harvey of Forest and Assistant District Attorney Takiyah Perkins of Greenwood.

Chancellor Perkins will take the position previously held by Chancellor Jon Barnwell. Judge Barnwell, who has served since June 1989, will retire Dec. 31.

Perkins, 66, has served in the Mississippi House of Representatives since 1993. He was a member of the House Ways and Means, Judiciary A and Judiciary En Banc committees as well as County Affairs, Gaming, Insurance, Management and Municipalities committees. He was board attorney for the Leflore County School District, city attorney for Itta Bena and attorney for the Greenwood Housing Authority and Central Mississippi Inc., CMI. He is a member of the Magnolia Bar, the Mississippi Bar and the NAACP. He is a graduate of Tougaloo College and the University of Mississippi School of Law.

Across the state, 42 new judges will take their oaths of office in ceremonies scheduled during the next three weeks. New judges include three new Court of Appeals judges, 20 new Chancery Court judges, nine new Circuit Court judges and 10 new County Court judges. New judicial terms begin on Jan. 1, 2019.
